One Society, More Challenges for Further Growth

Dear Colleagues,

It is my great pleasure to invite you to join us at the 73rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Hematology (JSH2011) in Nagoya, October 14(Fri) – 16(Sun), 2011. The annual meeting has showed the significant growth since the unification of the Japanese Society of Hematology and the Japanese Society of Clinical Hematology, and the Organizing Committee has been putting in great deal of effort to create an excellent program.

The goal of this meeting is to cover the latest topics in both basic and clinical science in our fields through educational initiatives. Our meeting will have 3 days and the program topics are set to move from basic to clinical from Friday to Sunday. It will be 3rd year to have the joint symposia with ASH and EHA, and this year’s JSH-ASH joint symposium features on basic research on Myeloid Malignancy, while JSH-EHA joint symposium features on clinical research on Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation. Moreover, in association with the field of hematology / translational research, cancer-related societies will join us to hold a joint symposum as well. Invited speakers vary from foreign pioneers to Japanese researchers who invested themselves in foreign countries, so I hope this will be a great opportunity for young fellows to seek their career abroad. Most of symposia will be in English, and some symposia will be available in Japanese such as the “pros and cons” debate session on clinical issues.

Series of the Educational Lectures will be held mostly in Japanese, but the slides will be available in English. Two speakers will talk on the same topic with different perspectives in Japanese. Topics will be chosen from current issues from Biology to Clinical Statistics, to provide interesting lectures from both basic and clinical point of view. Posters will be displayed for whole meeting periods and discussions will be made on Friday and Saturday. Oral session will be conducted in English and Japanese.

We are honored to have Dr. J. Evan Sadler, the president of ASH, and Dr. U. Jäger, the President Elect of EHA as Special Lecture speakers. I, myself, would like to talk on the future prospective of the treatment of leukemia, which I devote my life for.

Lastly, I would like to show my heartfelt gratitude to those who have worked tirelessly to organize successful meeting, and I am looking forward to seeing all of you in Nagoya in October.

Tomoki Naoe, MD
President, the 73rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Hematology
